Because the system is extremely easy to use, we have made it so that anyone can be the administrator (admin). All any user need do is click on the administrator's button and enter the proper password, and voila' they are now an administrator. Obviously, it is in your best interest to keep the admin password a secret, as only the password is needed. There is no check for the name, that's what makes it possible for one teacher to take over easily when another is absent, or sick. A good tactic is to simply register all teachers that may come in contact with the software immediately. Any one of these may now take on the role of administrator at any moment in time, all you need do is provide them with the password.
In this demonstration You should log into the Our Fables stack using two usernames or passwords:
1. Vince Jelenic, with a password of “zx”
2. New User, with a password of “Password”
(No extra spaces, the password is not case sensitive, thus using upper or lower case does not affect it, however you must be careful to type the names in properly).
An administrator has only a couple of tasks to perform.
First, register users, and assign them their passwords. The admin. can see any student's password. In case a student forgets, the admin can simply delete that student from the network, and insert their name once again with another password, or you may retrieve their password using the admin status.
A second task is that of censoring the fables, when needed. This is accomplished simply by going to any fable you wish, clicking on the eye icon, answering the password and you are now in admin mode. Change anything you wish, or delete the entire page. When you are finished be sure to click the eye icon again to turn the admin mode off again.
A note: If you delete a user from the net, you still leave their work there for all to read. Any page they created must be deleted by them or the admin. All other users will be able to read, but not change it. Thus we have solved the problem of children creating work for others to read, as it can continue to reside in that database indefinitely. One student leaves your school today, but leaves behind a legacy of their work for others to read, and perhaps build on.
This is a fairly radical departure from how most work on computers in schools is handled. We trust that you will appreciate the powerful effects of this type of approach.
At the first page, you can change the admin password any time you wish. Simply click on the admin button (key & stack icon) with the Option key held down. You will be shown the old password and asked if you wish a new one. Proceed to change it as you wish, just remember it, though.
Step three involves backing up the stacks. You should always keep an original copy of the software. The Aesop's Fables+ stack is locked and is never changed, and thus you could always simply replace it with a fresh one from your original disks should something go wrong.
The "Our fables" stack is a little more sensitive. It is in constant flux. It is wise to back it up once every few days (depending on use). In most cases it will fit onto a floppy disk, and this makes the process quite simple. Simply copy it to any disk you use as backup, and in case something happens you can always restore it to a few days ago's work. Remember that this stack is being accessed, changed, added to, and modified constantly, just as any document that is undergoing constant revision would be, treat it as such.
Step four, is simple. Relax and watch the kids go to it.
